Did Trump Interfere with Research Initiatives?
The Biden administration announced it has ordered the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to form a task force to investigate whether the Trump administration manipulated, distorted, interfered, or suppressed science in regards to making critical government decisions. A key focus of the task force is to make sure that, if such actions occurred in the Trump administration, to create fail-safes so that they don’t happen again, NBC reported.
The White House said the task force aims to “prevent improper political interference in the conduct of scientific research” and “prevent the suppression or distortion of scientific or technological findings.”
“Restoring and safeguarding scientific integrity will require the participation and contribution of scientists from across government, who will bring their diverse perspectives to the endeavor, including: type and size of agency, scientific or technological discipline, stage of career, methodology, and personal and professional background,” The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy said in a letter issued on Monday, The Hill reported.
Biden Urges US Governors to Reinstate Mask Mandates
On Monday, President Joe Biden pleaded with governors around the nation, as well as mayors and local leaders to reinstate or maintain mask mandates, Axios reports.
“This is not politics,” President Biden said in an address. “Reinstate the mandate if you let it down, and businesses should require masks as well.”
The urging comes following a pronouncement by CDC director Rochelle Wolinsky of “impending doom” in the wake of a potential fourth wave of cases, as a 7-day average of new cases increased by 10.6 percent sign from the previous week.
New Offshore Wind Power Program
On Monday, the Biden administration announced a new ambitious plan to massively scale up the use of offshore wind power, The Hill reported.
Currently, the United States has only 42 megawatts of offshore wind and operation. The Biden administration has set a goal of deploying and activating 30,000 megawatts of offshore wind power by 2030, the Huffington Post reported.
The Biden administration says its plan could create tens of thousands of new jobs while transitioning the country to clean energy. HuffPost reported that the Biden administration was preparing to unveil an anticipated $3 trillion package that would prioritize green infrastructure aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
